Crank Timing sprocket won't go on?

Hi I am replacing the timing chain on my 85 22re. The crank sprocket came off no prob but trying to get it back on is impossible, even the old one won't go back on. I tried warming the sprocket and it went half way and stopped. Got it off with a puller. But now I can't continue the job until I solve this problem. Anyone ever have this problem or any suggestions? The inner crank snout is wider than the two outer key positions. What am I missing! Thanks

Tomorrow I will check if the sprocket will even go on without the key.

Try a little lubrication..always makes things easier

But really, grease it up a little with some multi purpose/hi temp grease. Grease up the crank and sprocket and it should slide on there a little easier..use the wooden end of a hammer to tap it in place so you don't chip any teeth.

Thanks for the reply. I stepped back from it and realized I should try to put on without the key. It fit! So I filed down the removed key just so it would fit the slot on the sproket. And that was it! It fit on by hand. Thanks
