chevy 350 swap

I am looking to buy a 350 off of my Uncle pretty quick here. It was in a police interceptor vehicle. It needs to be rebuilt but he says he'll sell it to me for $350.00. The only thing holding me back is knowing whether or not I'll be able to smog my truck in California after I do this. It happens to be my daily driver. Anybody know?

I think in that state of california, it is illegal to swap out a engine( 22re to 350 v8) What I would do is call your local DMV and ask them if It would be ok and to see if they could smog it!

Yeah I think I'll head on over to the DMV today and ask them. Because that would be pretty sweet. Thanks.

Engine swaps where the new engine was NOT offered in that car are legal, provided they are the same or later year, all emissions equipment is brought over from the donor vehicle, the new engine is from the same emissions class (i.e. passenger car, truck, etc) and the vehicle passes inspection at a referree station.

350 for a core basically is not a bargain. You can get deals off ebay for complete running 350s for about 600. A rebuild will cost more than that if done correctly. I would pass on it if I was you unless it came with harness and computer.

Nothing in California is legal. If you can get someone to swap smog it, you might be in luck. It may pass emissions and run clean, but if you take it to a proper shop, they'll hit you for visual. I know places that will smog anything, let me know if you need help.
