Battery/starter/water pump/ who knows

having a problem here. 4runner wont turn over. just replaced the water pump cuz the shaft broke. put everything back together like it was and now the temp gauge is reading as hot as it goes and it will only start when i bump start it, at that point it has problems staying running. im gonna get the alternator tested and see if its good but im sure thats not the only problem because of the other symptoms. any things i should check? just got the 4runner so dont know enough to diagnose.

What kind of engine (what is the vehicle)?

The hard starting could be a missed tooth on timing. The temp, well- that's not good. Did you put coolant back in? Is it circulating?

oh sorry--- 1985 4runner 22re.

do you think that the problems might be unrelated? i added coolant and it looks like there are air bubbles and a little coolant coming through the new gasket on the water pump.

If all he did was change the water pump, then he shouldn't have had to pull the whole tchain cover to do it.

im thinking that the starter might be toast too. i was trying to jump it and it wouldnt turn over. plenty of battery power from another car. but that still doesnt explain it shutting off while im driving. its like every possibility is ruled out by something else.

Check your grounds for the battery and your connections at the starter and alt. Check all ground straps too.
