got an 85 4runner that when it is reved up it pops or backfires out of the air box... i cant go over 20mph with the truck or it shakes and makes all sorts of knocking noises.... any ideas??.... its a 22re... just rebuilt with 250miles on it

 

Backfire through the intake is a timing issue. Check your timing (make sure that your crankshaft/cam/distributor are lined up correctly 0* TDC).

 

they are.... i have been driving the truck now for 250miles and all the sudden this happend....

dont blame the engine blame the one you put it together...... if you got it dont at a shop take it to them.. if you did it yourself maybe take it to a yota tech and get them to tell you wahts up..... once the kinks are worked out im sure youll be more than happy with the yota.... i have had 3 and would never consider another suv or truck.

i know its old i just shouldnt have gone with the 22re route... i should have changed it to a 6 or even an 8.... not a fan of the 22re and im out of money to pay to fix it....

 

Are you serious? I have a 3.0 V6 and I wish everyday that it was the 22RE. And that is why I am going to swap a 2RZ into my truck. I have all the parts but not the time right now.

 

the 22re is one of the most reliable engines ever produced.

this seems to be simply a timing issue. engines cost money, and converting to a v6 or v8 would cost you much much more than fixing this problem. once this problem is fixed, and any other maintenance that needs to be done, you can get minimum of 350k miles on an engine with out a major rebuild.

 

im not saying the 3.0... id like to do a 4.3 chevy swap... i know i sound like a little bitch... but im just frustrated with the holidays and this truck im BROKE!! haha..... im use to chevys and new to the toyota world... its just not starting out good for me... im going to mess around with it tomarrow and see what i can find out... i started it today and its a little chattery but nothing big... when you bring the rpms up a little it makes that backfire... im going to check the timing and see what happens..... "pray for the best"


sorry for being a baby guys.... i have just had nothing but bad luck with my 4runner... i look at it and still dont think i would be able to let it go... it feels to good knowing its mine!

 

yeah man that is one nice 1st gen you got there....just try and not get to angry which i know is hard..my runners have made me more mad than almost a women.... but when you look at that sweet rig and everythings working like a yota should its worth it!

 

try to see if the tps is within spec and set right. along with the afm.

 

its timing, make sure the timing marks all line up. the your gonna want to throw a timing light on it, the 22re's are supposed to be @ 5 degrees advanced on the the pulley. do it right!

timing is set correctly... tps is set correctly..... still doing it... their is no vacume leaks and nothing is lose..... i dont understand.. and i am also seeing a milkey look under the oil cap.... does this mean my head gasket is going already?? with 250mils on it????? WTF!

 

means moisture in the oil. Could be headgasket, could be timing chain wore through water jacket, could simply be water got in there. I'd run a compression check for starters.

Couple things...

Into the airbox is a LEAN fuel mixture or early timing. Couple things on my 22RE were bad wires and a bad cap and rotor. Thing was a total dog. never had an issue with the backfire though.

that "milky" substance can also be an indicator the engine just ain't getting warm enough. As such, it needs to be driven. As a result of your backfire, it may have created a situation where moisture is condensing in your valve cover and mixing with your oil.

 

well i droped it off at the shop that built the motor...they told me they would fix it for free.... cant beat that!
