auto trans question

Well we finally got charlie's 85 running but there are a few issues. First, after the truck is running there is a grinding noise. It sounds like maybe the starter isn't disengaging from the flywheel. Do you shim toyota starters?

The second problem is that the truck don't move when you put it in gear. It is an automatic. I tried every gear in both the trans and the transfercase. I checked the linkage on both too. It's probably something simple. I'm considering pulling the valve body and checking things out.

I don't know the history of the truck as it wasn't running when I bought it.

What did you do to get this far and why?

Was the motor pulled? Replaced?

Fluid level of trans?

I you removed the motor and reinstaled, did you seat the torque converter properly? Did you tighten the converters bolts?

There was a thread here earlier about the starter, hey had the same grining issue. The thought there was younormally do not shim toyota. might search see their solution.

Good luck

it will pobably be a

We just put this motor in it. As far as I can remember I seated it. If not, I would think the trans would be pushed away from the motor. Fluid level is good.

Maybe something is messed up in the converter?

What are the wires that you see when you take the pan off?

the grinding noise could be the torque converter rubbing against the flex plate if you forgot to bolt it on. That would be an easy fix for both problems. good luck

Its possible, but i have never seen one go out personaly.

If it was not seated right you can still get the trans bolted up, problem is it will take out the front pump, instead of seating it in the front pump you make it fit by pushing the back of the pump shaft. ( done it once in a ford, oops)

I have not done much with a toyota auto, all my experiance lies in domestic chevy and ford stuff. So i am not to sure what wires you are talking about.

from what i know i think the yota tranny is servo controled, even if one or two where bad i would think you should have at least a semblance of movement.

What was the fluid level? if it gets to low it can not create the hydraulic pressure to engage the gears to move. ( learned that the hard way)

Keep digging, and good luck will try to find answers to hwat i can.
