I posted this to the Engine Swap forum but this is where I should have posted.
Some Backstory:
I have a great little '84 2WD long bed with a five-speed, which I will refer to as the '84 or Bob (the Builder), but the head needs major repair or replacement. When I got it, for free I might add, the spark plugs were stripped, no big deal, new coils or certs and I'm good to go... turns out that had been done before, and after talking with quite a few people it looks like I can't go with a larger size. So after some thought, and lots of searching for a new (old-style) head, I figured a donor truck was in order. I found a neighbor with an '89 pickup that hit a tree, wrecked the front, and bent the frame, who was willing to let it go in trade for 25 hours of work helping him on his mill. It's a fifth-gen pickup, while mine is a fourth, but it has a good 22r (and a four-speed if my five ever goes). Because the 22r in my '84 is the older style with the different pistons and head, it's Engine Swap Time!! Oh, and this is to be my work truck, nothing fancy, just reliable, comfortable in the PNW wet and cold winters, and a big bed for hauling yard debris, trash, lumber... you get the point. As you can tell, I'm not trying to spend much or chase HP. Anyways on with the build
Swap Time:
What I have done thus far is pull the old 22r from Bob and the new 22r from the '89. Upon further inspection, the new 22r will need a good coolant system flush, a handful of gaskets, the fan from the old 22r (it got cracked and warped from the crash), and the Webber from Bob. I'll post some photos of my progress.
Questions:
I've never worked with a Webber Carb before... I'll do my research before I ask questions, but I'm sure I will have them.
How anal should I be about getting the coolant system flushed and clean? It's pretty rusty I'll attach photos.
I'm replacing the clutch while the engine is out... Would a full teardown of the engine and rebuild be smart? It's a lot more work, but it could save me a lot of time later down the road. I'm using my wife's Subaru while I fix Bob, so I want it back on the road as soon as I can. (She does too lol)
If anyone knows of any similar threads I'd love to be pointed in their direction!!
