Thanks for the advice! When I had the problems with my battery I had a friend of mine who's a licensed mechanic go over all the wiring and charging systems and replace anything that was worn. Ill certainly keep an eye on it. Sorry to hear about yours

Gave it a quick face lift while waiting on parts in the mail

The truck is looking much better!

Those shock absorbers were way past their prime.

Don't forget to wash out the inside of the frame. Lots of junk collects there over the years and can start rusting the frame from the inside out.

Thanks! Once I get the bed off I plan on building something like this, washing it out and treating the inside of the frame with some Eastwoods internal frame coating.

I had almost given up hope of finding a replacement bed when a friend of mine blew the head gasket and cracked the block on her 88 single cab. Long story short I got the whole truck for $400. The frame and drivetrain are pretty shot but the body and interior are in great shape for new england

Finally got the new parts truck home today. The frame isn't nearly as bad as i thought but its old 22re is looking like a total loss. Im going to swap the bed, fenders and a few other things onto the 85 and then Im not really sure what Im going to do with it... part it out, sell it as is or hang onto it until I have the funds to do an engine swap and build it into a rock crawler?

came with a free cap

it was originally red

blown head gasket, cracked head, destroyed cam shaft

some good interior parts but nothing special

whoever painted it didn't do a particularly good job

At least the bed looks much cleaner!

Hopefully that paint job isn't hiding too many surprises!

Took advantage of a few day off and pulled the beds off of both trucks. I cleaned, wire brushed and coated the entire back half of the 85 with rust reformer before painting it black. I ran into some issues when the fuel filler neck broke apart in my hands but I guess thats the good thing about having a parts truck. Im contemplating painting the entire truck a color I like more than red. I dont plan on ever selling it so I dont really care about matching the original color.

Thumbs up

Solid. Nice score on the parts truck! I have an 85 extra cab also, and dealing with a lot of rust also. Good work with the frame so far! Eastwoods internal frame coating is definitely what I would do, I wish I could get it where I live. Definitely need to clean it out well though. The leaf blower method is pretty good but I found there wasn't much room to stick the nozzle in the back of our frame rails, and even then I couldn't see it doing a good enough job of getting all the crap out, you'd be amazed how much ˟˟˟˟˟ finds it's way in there. What I ended up doing is using a straight air lance (1/4 to 1/2 inch diameter tube) on a big air compressor and shoving in as far as I could, then going around blowing from all the holes. I even cut a good 2 to 3 inch hole in the bottom of either side frame rail where I knew the rust was the worst (usually just before the bend up towards the rear where any water would sit in the frame) to let all the stuff come out, then patch welded it up after it was all done. I blew it out with air, blew it out with a steam pressure washer, then blew it out again real good to dry it, then coated it with a quality inhibitor using a fan tip extension nozzle ( I would have used Eastwood's if they shipped that stuff out here). It was a lot of work but worth it.

Your cab body looks to be in good shape, I would take some time to make sure it'll stay that way. Mine is so bad I'm doing a cab swap right now, you don't want to have to do that, it's a nightmare. I would address any rust on the body asap, do some preventative maintenance on the common trouble areas like the clutch/brake master areas, rocker panels, and windshield trim/A pillars. I'm a little late for this now since you got the bed back on already but the best way to access the rocker panels on the cab is from the rear bottom corner drain plugs. But it's between the cab and bed and hard if not impossible to access with the bed on. Otherwise, you can pull off the interior plastic trim on the rocker panels and A pillars and sick an extension nozzle to spray inhibitor in there. Could even coat it with eastwoods I guess but that might be a bit much. But yeah, good luck man looks good so far! Hows the 22R running on that thing after sitting so much?

Been a while since my last post. Haven't had a ton of time to work on the truck but it has gone through some changes in the last few months.

Most importantly I painted it. I know some people will critise this decision but I figure since I never plan on selling this truck Id like to get the most enjoyment out of it I can.

The next major rust spots were on the front fenders so I took the good ones off of the parts truck and and swapped them onto the 85. While I was at it I coated the insides and the front clip with a rust preventative coating.

I found a considerable amount of rust inside the front bumper so swapped the practically new one from the 88 onto the 85

Built a quick platform in the bed and did some festival camping.

The cap not lining up with the cab was really starting to bother me so I picked up another high-rise cap that fit better.

This is how the truck is sitting now. Clearly I need to pick up some add-a-leafs for the back.

Just scored this inclinometer for $20. Not at all the right color for my interior so I might pass it on down the line

You east coast guys can actually buy Toyota's/parts for cheap compared to the west coast. But we don't have rust
Nice work!
