84 4runner sr5 question

I'm looking at purchasing an 84 sr5 but the guy is telling me its a carb motor. I know the 22re's were rare in 84 but figured if it was an sr5 model it would make sense for it to have the fuel injection as well. Anyone know anything about this? Maybe the guy swapped the injection for a carb or he rebuilt this thing. He says it has 199k on it and that when he's going uphill it lacks power if he's on the highway. Also anyone know any particular weakspots to this year like where I should pay special attention to? Thanks in advance

Look for rot, the rear fenders love to rust out along with frame rot. 1985 was the first year for fuel injection.

BTW all 22r and RE motors are dogs going up hill.

About the only trucks that had 22RE's in 1984 were 2wd pickups (makes no sense to me either). All 4Runners were 22R and all but a few rare late model year 4wd trucks were 22R. Then in 1985, all 4Runners came with 22RE's and trucks still had both available.

Thanks for the help guys. I knew about the frame rot unfortunately from my 87 I just recently got rid of. I never noticed a big lack of power from the 22r's or re's on the uphill but I haven't driven one around that much in a while. Ah well the life of a 4 banger

4x4 4Runners and pickups did NOT have the 22RE until 85. In 85, the vast majority of trucks now used the 22RE, but some still DID use the 22R as an option until the late 80s I believe.

BTW my 22R isnt a dog on hills

My 87 is carbed and its the "delux" i think it just ment carpet and sticker on teh side. Moutains are a chore and highways are almost impossible. Im about to swap on a webber carb and downey header to see if that helps any.

Bingo. 85 was first year for the RE and available in 4Runners only. Available in other models starting in 86 and until 89.
