4x4 fender

Just curious, how hard is it to "enlargen" the wheel well on the 2WD fenders to replicate a 4WD fender? My buddy with the Toyota Trailblazer has a toasted driverside fender and mine have dents... maybe used fenders would be cheaper than actual bodywork (which I would end up paying someone to do).

I noticed that on the 2WD fenders, the difference in wheel well size is my a metal strip that appears to be removable... any takers on the subject?
