I'm in the market for a stock '85 extended cab truck with the 22re. Apparently, everyone else in Amercia is too... As I'm sure you all know, they are not easy to find.

I read (on here, I think) that only about 20% of the '85 models had the fuel injected motor. With that in mind, it's much easier to find 84's and carb'd 85's.

Lets say I bought an 84 or 85 with a 22R and drove it until the motor gave up the ghost. What is required to swap it for a 22RE? Engine and wiring harness? Are there certain 22RE's that will or won't work? (I saw a turd of a Corrolla on Ebay with a 22re. BIN price was like $500, but would that work in a truck?).

And if you have any thoughts on where to get an stock(ish) '85 22RE in the southeast, I'm all ears.

 

I think (Feel free to correct me If I'm wrong) Any late model (84+) 22r(e) will swap in with no motor bracket modifications. This includes the celica motors.

As for the EFI, many people have done the swap. I think you end up needing 6-7 wires out of a different harness. Some people have done it my modding the stock harness, others have completely reinstalled a new harness. I would probably do the former.

You're right! Sorry about that. I erroneously assumed that it was and didn't look at the engine photo. I've obviously spent too much time around 4Runners which only came in EFI from '85 onwards.

Apologies for the double post as well. For some reason the first one didn't post immediately.

 

That's a great looking truck, and I would buy it in a heartbeat, even without the EFI. But, it's in Arizona and I'm in South Carolina. Shipping would add another $1000 or so to the purchase price....

Thanks for the info on swapping engines or just intakes/EFI. Sounds like it isn't an extremely difficult procedure if it comes down to that.
