My machinist said that "20 leakdown is the maximum 'acceptable' #. 8-10 is pretty darn good!"
If your motor was newer, I would say "could be the rings still seating"... but 27? Hmmm.
Couldn't his valve seals be causing some of this? Maybe the timing(cam gear) being so far off like that(jumped teeth) could have possibly tweaked a couple valves? ... Sorry if that's not likely, ...just thinking out loud. My buddy was a few teeth off when he started his newer motor and bent some valves.

sorry to say but we did not rebuild it every thing that came with the head gasket kit we put on. all the gaskets and the valve seats, then the mechanic tweaks the timing. drove it today thoe and man that power is back sideways in 2nd gear again gotta go grade drive way now!!!!!

I get it out to the Sierras and Sequoias when I can( sure wish it was more often), ...get's plenty dirty while out there... Then I wash it. I KNOW! Sometimes I wash it before taking pictures! Maybe I should just sell it, now and buy an escalade? hehee, jk. Yeah, ... Nothing wrong with stomping on it till things break. I've had my fun doing that with many trucks , at times, over the last 27 years..... just had to be practical over the last few years... many family crises, 80 hour- 7 day weeks for a while now, most often... and such.

Hahahah, an Escalade?..yeah, never, ..I was just messing with ya. Sure, I'll be scanning pics, eventually. I just got my DSLR Canon not long ago(have to scan so many pics from the past from disposables and 35mm's), .... and the net surfing isn't MUCH older to me, lol. I have been stomping on these things(and chevy's and fords and even a Scout) for 27 years, 85, ...just never had but two that were SUPER lifted and such. Now, I'm just working so much,.... Heck, I've not been on a trip yet, this year! I do have some pics of her in a spot that I LOVE, deep in in the Angeles National Forest, from March, I believe. I'll find em on my laptop. Like I said, ...it's DRY AS A DEER TICK IN PHOENIX, everywhere I go. But, when I go in the winter, there's more opportunity for filthy wheelin, lol.

man shes good hate to say it but nosed it down in the ditch rear wheels still on dry hot pavement put it in second and lit them up(never done that before) i thought it would kill so i lot happier, this was my 33" street mudders thoe. gonna put the boggers back on soon,crawl the clay pits this week.

we mainly go once or twice a year (camping) and bring the trucks. but i live next to two clay pits so i have unlimited access the best part is they dig 6 days a week so its always a different terrain.

DANG! Yeah, there are some not TOO far from me, but not close enough to go for the day, ya know? These freeways are NIGHTMARISH! So, I just have to wait until I can get away for my 7-14 Day treks. LOVE the Sierras the most, and there is tons of mud around the Hot Creek(it's a creek that is literally HOT, ...in some places enough to kill ya quick, lol...) in Mammoth Area. But, pretty much everything else where I go is Dunes, High Desert, etc. It's incredibly beautiful, but unless it's rained recently, ...yeah, no mud, lol.
That's really cool you have a place like that right in your proverbial back yard, 85~! Take care, ...don't get TOO sideways. Oh, and tell yer wife to stop laughing when you get chased by bees... It could happen to her, lol. Jk, I know it's hard not to laugh at our mates when crazy stuff happens....especially after many years.

hey im new to this sight so i cant post my own thing so i hope you dont mind me going off yours i just put a timing chain in and all new gears,tinconers,guides and new valves and it was idling and the timing chain came off and the chain only had at most 75 miles on it any ideas why it could have poped off
