I have an 84 4x4 that originated in California but is now in Arizona. I have modified the motor by adding headers, weber carb and removed all of the emissions parts and blocked off all the necessary parts with the LCE kit. My problem is the smog pump which, if you have an a/c compressor, is the sole tensioner for the fan belt. I called up LC Engineering to see if they had an idler pulley to replace the pump but they haven't designed one so I figured that I would just gut the pump, leaving only the bearings so I would end up with a big ugly adjustable pulley. Unfortunately, I couldn't break the smog pump down and remove the guts and finally just put it back on the truck. I'm worried that the unconnected smog pump will eventually suck a rock or something up inside it and seize the pump, throwing the belt. I thought that maybe simply connecting a hose from the inlet to the outlet might solve that problem but the real solution would be to either gut the pump or replace it with some kind of adjustable pulley. I am sure that some of you out there have come up against this problem and hope that I can get a suggestion on how best to deal with this. Does anybody make a simple adjustable pulley to replace the smog pump? Thanks for reading and I look forward to any comments. ......bruce
I've never seen a truck with AC and a smog pump. Usually with AC the truck had a pulse air system to replace the pump as the AC and air pump sat in the same place on the engine below the intake manifold. Got a pic of the engine compartment on that side?
Thanks very much for replying. After I posted, I went through all 24 pages of the excellent thread on here about de-smogging the 22r and found a post in there from a guy who had a similar problem. He ended up gutting the smog pump and he made it sound easy but I couldn't get mine apart. I'll go ahead and take it out again and apply more force this time with a pry bar and the BFH😁. I think that you are right about the rarity of a truck with both the smog pump and an A/C compressor. When I talked to a tech from LCE , he knew about the issue but said that they haven't designed or manufactured an idler pulley to replace the pump because there wasn't enough demand for them. He also recommended just gutting the pump or making a custom part myself. Thanks, Bryce
I've also heard that lots of the 1984 trucks have strange configurations of other parts as they were putting them together with whatever was available, knowing that everything was going to change for the 1986. In fact my transmission is one not commonly installed on the 84
mechkw, my CA 83 has both the A/C compressor and the smog pump. The A/C comp sits above the smog pump, and as Bruskihi stated, the smog pump is the tensioner for the A/C. I've also seen an 84 at the junkyard with the same configuration.
My CA 84 has the smog pump in the same location but sadly no factory A/C (got all the bits to install but not the time haha). If you really want some pictures I can snap a few for ya.
Bruskihi, Which transmission do you have in your 84?
If it were me, I'd make a bracket for an idler pulley.
You could very likely use the existing bracket/tension bolt for the smog pump, a power steering idler pulley, and a simple custom bracket to hold the pulley. Just my $0.02.
My thought was to completely remove the smog pump and put the AC where the factory puts it and tighten the belt with the idler like my 84 has. You'd have to locate the AC block mount. Personaaly I don't like anything more on an engine that there has to be. Just more stuff to wear out and maintain
Thanks. Now that I am seeing this, it does look familiar. Usually I see either a smog pump or an AC pump in that location like I previously mentioned. Not too many of these trucks running around anymore that haven't been gutted or heavily modified
Has anyone tried rebuilding one of these? These shaft on my pump is frozen, the replacement pump by cardone is no longer available and they won’t rebuild mine. Thinking of either rebuilding myself or deleting it all. Any advice?
