1985 Toyota pickup splice for trailer

Hello fellow yotas

I have been searching for days now and can’t get a straight answer. I don’t have no trailer plug on my truck I want to install one. Can I just use a regular 4 pin connector from Walmart and splice it into one set of tail lights to use my brake stop and turn lights? If so, can anyone help with what wire goes where. If not is there some sort of converter I can use. I’ve read where people used a splice and some used a converter. I just want a simple 4 pin connector to connect my trailer. Any help would greatly be appreciated

You have to get an adapter kit from the auto parts store. Trailers have combined brake and turn bulbs whereas the Toyota and quite a few foreign cars are separate bulbs. The adapter has a small box where the wires are integrated with diodes (i believe) to prevent back feed. Look here

Have fun, just follow the directions that come with the kit and you should be good.
