what vehicle(s)? Front or rear?
79-83 is considered 1st gen for pick ups, 84-85 are 2nd gen with a solid front axle (SFA), '86-'88 are 2nd gen with Independent Front Suspension (IFS).
'84-'85 are 1st gen SFA 4runners, '86-'89 are 1st gen with IFS. '90-95 are 2nd gen with IFS
All of those come with "solid rear axles"

79-83 trucks are considered first generation
84-85 4 runners are considered first generation

79-85 trucks had soild front axles, 84-85 trucks look just like the 86-89 trucks with independent front suspension( IFS)

all the trucks have solid rear axles

84 was the first year of extended cab

the front solid axles are interchangeable (79-85). the axles gradually got more strength gussets through the years. model year 85 (truck and 4 runner)had a solid axle and fuel injection, and some consider these more valuable.

do you have a truck? what year?

So other than the obvious differences in the bodies of the 2 generations of truck there is some differences in the Straight Axles themselves:

Toyota Mini Truck Front Axle Identification
79-80 no gusset
81-83 short gusset (to u-bolts)
84-85 long gusset (past u-bolts)

So the 84-85 axles are technically stronger housings.

The straight axle swap (SAS) if really favored by the heavy duty wheelers. If you plan for the truck to be a daily driver, and you want to save about 1000.00 bucks you will be just fine with the IFS. There are a lot of aftermarket parts out there now that really beef up the IFS suspension. No, it's not as strong as the straight axle but for daily drivers, the IFS will be more road friendly.

If you are going to do mostly mud ridding and plan to stay at or below 33" tires. You will just fine with IFS. No, you will not have the flexibility that a SAS or straight axle rig will but how hardcore are you really planning to wheel? If you build it hardcore, can you afford to break it? Will it be your only ride?
