Here's mine. I used an old set of spider gears from a friend who had quick lockers installed. The extra spider gears gave a lot more surface area for welding. I think the plate is a good idea, too.

Looks solid, the extra spiders look nice too, because they can mesh in the gears to give that added strength once welded..

I keep talking myself out of welding the front diff. I know it will give a ton of traction, but i'm running with no power steering and wide tires. Might be best to save up for a Detroit and power steering setup.

I want to weld my rear diff sooooo bad, but my truck is a DD and I drive 65 miles round trip to work 5 days a week, I take the interstate the entire way to work, do you guys think it will eat up my tire too bad?

you won't notice it on the freeway. its when you are turning sharp corners that you'll notice the tire skipping or hopping, and that's where you get the extra wear.

weld it.

If its a DD i had a welded rear and couldnt stand it. Its whatever you think though. 4.10s welded in rear just puttering around town was no fun. Drove straight and true down the highway no problem.

If you do 90% freeway driving....weld it.

I welded my rear (only) in my 80 2wd and turned that little sucker into a drifting longbed! my dork friends with 240sx's thought it was awesome i could out drift them with my pickup. The benefit was when they were stuck for the winter, i put on some snow tires on steelies and went pretty much anywhere too. had it like that for almost 3 years and didn't really notice any adverse tire wear

i welded my rear diff on my cherokee and i loved it! i liked hearing the skt skt skt skt arount the turns haha. the little bit of tire wear is well worth it i think. ill be welding the 79 very soon...probably front and back
and good idea with the plate on the spider gears!

I was told even with front welded all you do is lock 1 hub in and its just like a open diff, and when wanting max traction lock in both

a welded front diff with only one hub locked in will break stock axleshafts and hubs, a limited slip is way easier on things, but if u have chromoly longs with hub gears, u will be fine being welded with one hub locked.
