Trouble shooting starting trouble

I'm not a mechanic, but can change plugs, wire, ect ok.

83 twd 22r runs like a top fore the most part.

yesterday after running pretty hard, I stopped for a coke and restroom break. When i tried to crank it up it would not fire up right away (usually fires right up). After cranking an pumping for about 10 seconds, it cought but still seemed reluctant to stay at Idle for a few moments...........when it seemed to Idle on its own I continued on my way and it ran great.

Now about every other crank up I have the same trouble. Runs great, but reluctant to start.

What do you think.........fuel or fire?

mine has to crank for a few sec some times to. mine is the fuel drains out of the lines back in to the tank.

a compression tester is a psi gage with a hose that hooks up to a sparkplug hole.

yes, seems to crank up ok if I hold the pedal
to the floor while cranking..... it fires up.

Is that normal for a caborated system?

Thanks for the replies.

I had an '83 pickup for about 10 years. My owner's manual procedure was to hold the gas pedal about half way and crank when hot. Do not pump or it can flood. When cold, pump the pedal once to the floor, leave the pedal up, and crank. Always worked well for me.

Your accelerator pump might have got clogged or malfunctioning (it squirts fuel in the carb when you start up) You can unbolt it from the carb, and run a welding wire through the passage to clear out anything.

The fuel draining back to the tank also sounds like a good suspect, not sure what would be causing that all the sudden though. I guess you could disconnect the fuel inlet hose at the carb, crank the engine and see if fuel is immediately pumped through (have something there to catch the gas)
