Trans help

Ok I have a 1981 4x4 toyota 22r 5 speed that the trans has gone out on from what I can tell from reading it should be a L50 trans I am haveing a hard time finding one and want to know if I can put a W56 in there what I need is to still have a 5 speed and I like low gearing and it needs to drop in I dont want to mod anything so I need to know if the cluch is the same, are they the same length, will my trans case mount up, are all the plugs and speedo the same, gear ratio and anything else I have not thought of yet. Also what is the difference between W56 A,B, and C?

I think you can bolt up an L52 (came with '83 and I think 82's) with no mods. Maybe try checking out the Marlin Crawler forum some people there may know off the top of their heads. If you're that worried about keep everything exactly the same then put in a rebuilt L50, otherwise don't worry so much about it.

I've heard both things about the W56. Most say you need to move the crossmember back a bit, plus cut into your floorboards a bit because the whole tranny/t-case combo is longer, and the shifters are a bit farther back. Which means you also need a shorter rear d-shaft and I think a longer front d-shaft. I was talking to a guy the other day who claimed a W56 will go right in, no cutting or d-shaft mods, all you need to do is flip the crossmember 180 degrees. Somehow it doesn't make sense to me but he knows a hell of a lot more about this stuff than me, so....

Any later model tranny from a 22 series engine (R or RE) should bolt up to the engine no problem. As far as the drive shafts and x-member and floorboard cutting...I haven't done it so I don't know.

L52's bolt up with no mods whatsoever. Simple R&R.

W-series trans do require more stuff; as 83 indicated above, check with Marlin to see what's what.
