mines not a 1st gen..but..its '86 22R 5spd..with the 31" swampers and the BURNT clutch..i could make it do 75speedo..bout 82 or so actual
no with my 28" street tires...i could make it hit 100mph on a major downhill..and it got there FAST..within 1/16th of a mile..haha..
im hoping after my rebuild, the bore, the cam..all that..i can make it climb to 100mph on flat ground...

From: Yotatech, because Pirate is too expensive. NorCal.
I do 85 at least 3 times a week in my '82 and for some reason it has more than enough power getting all the way up to 85mph but then it stops. Never can get it to go faster than 85.

if we want to go fast I'll just hop in my bmw and go 125 up hills,(gotta love euro sedans) all the way to jail! I'm kinda getting frustrated tryin to bring this thing back to life. I think the po was a complete imbecile and never maintained anything on the truck

Yeah a lot of the differences for people are that in the last 20+ years, a lot of things were and weren't done to these trucks. Some stupid things were done, and a lot of good maintenance things weren't. You just don't know what you're dealing with until you've really trouble-shot the whole truck.
I'd agree that gears are a big improvement. With my 30x9.50s my gearing is fine, but even just the jump to 31's will hurt the performance. But depending the condition of your truck..if emissions stuff is all plugged up or you have low compression or something, a header or performace cam or anything like that isn't going to help you much.

is there any good way to clean the emissions garbage?
I'd like to keep the truck fairly stock as I know they will wheel great, and if it isn't 15 feet in the air, mileage will be better. I've always liked older cars anyway. On a side note, I had to laugh at a couple people talking about a 24" lift for their chevys(lol) good luck there.

You can clean the egr valve by pulling it and spray it or soaking it in carb cleaner or seafoam. Make sure all your check valves along the vacuum hoses are working (fsm shows which end to blow in etc to see if they're plugged). The egr system especially likes to build up carbon quickly, which is why so many people get rid of it. It does help your engine, though, to have it working.

I'll have to clean the egr. I took one of the check valves off and blew into it and it was more of a orange and white tube. no resistance either way at all. looked into it and there wasn't anything in there to suggest any thing was ever in there, not that that is the correct way to check those...
I'm starting to think I'll just keep it stock, otherwise I feel like i'll be changing something that was made by a team of engineers, designed to work to work as a unit and I don't think I know enough to play engineer successfully.

when i bought my old truck, it had a top speed of around 60mph with my foot to the floor. of course, with 300,000 miles on the original 20R and 30" tires. after the engine build-up and regearing, it'd would do 65-70 any day of the week in 5th without trouble on the freeway(including uphill).
i never pushed it to see how fast it could go, it was scary with 34" swampers! the way they were balanced, they'd rattle your teeth loose at 60 but rode very smooth around 70. the kid i sold it to drives it every day.

Well my trucks doing good. I drove to Salt Lake yesterday with the back full of stuff and I easily did 75mph. I had to drop into 4th on mountain passes but I never had to drop into 3rd. I almost wonder if having some weight in the back helped...
I won't be going over 75 anymore, though. With all that weight, some bumps I hit at 80 made the whole truck kind of sway back & forth and it was hard to get it back under control...not cool.
I'm actually really impressed that my truck is doing 75 easily with the back loaded up, even on some inclines. Any more than that probably isn't a good idea in these trucks anyways.

i'm impressed! do you make the trip to slc often? and i agree, these trucks hitting bumps at 75 could easily turn out bad. I haven't had a chance to work on my truck. my girlfriend came into town and we know how that goes.

20R, No smog stuff and no cat(Can. spec), Weber 32/36 + redline spacer, 2 1/4" exhaust, timed and tuned by me, 4:10's and 35x13.5s, 150 pound flat deck.
cruises nicely at 90km/h on the hwy unless there's a hill then I have to down shift from 5th to 3rd. I got it going 120km/h on the needle and its off by about 30% so id say I was really going 140km/h took alot to get it there.
It accelerates faster than my buddies 2.5L S10 and B2200 but If I drive it nice it gets good mileage too, like 20mpg average.

hmm, so what you're saying is that my truck needs more work than I thought... doh! oh well, it's already a money pit. found out that both timing chain guides were broken(who the... put that chain in anyway...?!) so we pulled the motor(it needs a clutch) and the trans imput shaft is loose. I'm talkin like 1/4+ inches! jeez does this truck have anything that works right? it doesn't make any funny sounds or anything, but how hard would it be to replace the input bearing? is that the problem? idk...never messed with trannys before. I don't know if I should junk the thing or fix everything
#39
Hey, that's just how I felt when I started digging around in my truck. Well...sucks going into debt. It's up to you. I just went ahead and fixed it all, but that's not for everyone. I really didn't need the extra debt, that's for sure.
Marlin sure makes a good tranny...or you can start looking into a used W56 off craigslist. Minimum mods to make it fit. Input shaft bearing is the weak link on the L52 trannies.
