Okay so I just rebuilt the motor in my 83 and it ran great but had this loud ticking and after weeks of searching I noticed that my timing chain had lots of slap on the driver side which was slapping around and ate away part of a bolt. So I replaced the timing set (which too a long time) with one that I knew was good with everything besides the tensioner due to the other one had deep grooves in it. I got all done and fired up the truck it ran great and the motor was silent and ran better than ever before. But after driving for a day THE NOISE CAME BACK and I noticed the driver side of the chain. I set the motor to top dead center to check the marks on the cam and the crank and they were right on. What could cause this please help it is really a problem I need to get it fixed yesterday!

 

Oh and the timing set is a double roller set

 

I just took the front apart and installed the timing chain as if it was a new on and the tension was fine on both sides could the chain be skipping and causing is to create slack on driver side due to work sprocket or tensioner?

 

You should start a build thread instead of 21 different 'help me' threads. Just sayin.

I know a lot but I am still a newb to a lot of things.

 

I had a very similar problem. i had the same loud slapping noise after a fresh rebuild of a 84 block, took off the timing cover and one of my timing guides was cracked and my chain was stretched like crazy. so i bought a OSK timing chain set and used the original Toyota tensioner and havn't had any problems since. Note: On the passenger side guide (the u shaped one) there is a slotted hole for the upper bolt. pull the guide all the way tho the right so it will put maximum tension on the chain.

 

Thanks for the input and I talked with engnbldr and found it was a bolt that was too long in the timing cover that was not letting the tensioner work properly so much work only to find there was a simple solution make me mad
