Tacometer wiring 1977 pickup

Just pickup up a long bed 5 speed 1977 for 1500 I got a tachometer for it and am having trouble with the signal wire if I run it off the negative pole on the coil the tach reads 8k constantly (the max it reads) so im just wondering what what the right place to get tach signal is. Also I saw on a 88 some guy on a forum said to run it off the green wire on the igniter assembly and that also did not work.

Do you have the tach set to a 4 cylinder? When I put a tach in my 81, here's how I wired it. Typically, you'll connect the red wire to a switched 12V power source, the black wire to ground, the green wire to the negative side of the ignition coil, and the white wire to the parking/headlights for illumination. What color wires does your tach have? I think they all should be the same colors regardless of brand. I would definitely check that you have a good ground.

I think I bought my tach from O'Reilly auto parts. Yes the $25.00 tach could be the problem. The one I bought from O'Reilly wasn't very expensive.
