Stock 22r distributor vs D.U.I. HEI - power steering clearance

My 82 22R has a D.U.I. hei dizzy, unfortunately the previous owner bought the short shaft unit for no power steering a fact I learned once I started tinkering with upgrades. I want to add hi steer & power steering but the distributor won't allow for using a stock location mounted pump.

My choices are go back to a stock 22r dizzy or mount a power steering pump & custom bracket on the passenger side, if I did that I'd probably go gm saginaw. Even considered an electric power steering pump from a mini cooper, neither are ideal & the cooper pumps are junk really.

The pro of the stock dizzy is I could at least pickup tune up parts locally instead of ordering special a cap/rotor online. But how good/bad are the stock units? Any other ideas besides another expensive aftermarket dizzy? Thanks in advance for your help

I have no experience with the D.U.I. HEI setup, but I never felt that I needed anything other than my stock distributor.

The stock distributor is pretty darn good for stock or relatively mildly modified engines. Unless your engine setup needs the capability beyond what the stock distributor can provide, my choice would be to go back to the stock ignition system.

Unless your motor is highly modified there is absolutely no reason for an HEI set up, when I was in my v8 days I put one on my el Camino SS and still noticed no difference with close to 500hp. Now if you had points that’s another story and worth a conversion, I’m not familiar with the older gens, they don’t have points do they?

I honestly don't know if they had points or not? I hope the 82 model didn't, sounds like the hei may have it's day's numbered.

Just searched a bit it’s looking like your good, might look here if getting an oem one is too much, I’m sure you can find a used one but this looks pretty good, looks like they have a shorty one too but it’s pricey, but stock for 119, not bad
