STICK SHIFT GETS WARM NEAR TRANSMISSION. IS MY TRANSMISSION READY TO GO OUT? SOMETIMES TO WARM TO TOUCH.

 

Check transmission fluid level (remove fill plug, the fluid should be flush with the hole). Or drain and replace fluid if it's been a long time, even if it is clear (shouldn't be black, gray, dark brown).

 

I just had all fluids replaced. the only gear that sounds smooth is 4th gear. 5th gear gets a little weird.

 

Depending on how warm could just be a bad boot? Hot air from motor flows over that area and things will get a little warm but not as much in winter i'd think?

If you never checked the overlooked small boot on top of trans shift retainer that keeps dust out, good time... they crack from heat and all that shifting allowing dust and dirt to enter trans. Can't remember how the trasfer case is....

I made a shift boot for the floor out of soft black vinyl sewn on one side with a small 1/8" rope folded in at top and sewn to tie it tight to stick.

Just a thought, don't know but might consider adding some synthetic gear oil or an additive perhaps, more input?
