steering problem on my 82 pickup

my steering wheel on my 1982 manual steering 4x4 toyota pickup is not catching. it takes a half turn before it even turns the wheels an the rest of the time its like a empty wheel or air in the wheel. it connects back in at other times. i put another steering box in but the problem isnt fixed..... any ideas in getting desperate!

Supposed to be tight, no play. Sounds like time to rebuild the draglink (rebuilt kits are available aftermarket and from Toyota). Probably pull it off and see what condition the parts are in before proceeding. If the draglink has not been lubed in a long time, the ball studs could be worn. If so the pitman and steering arms would need to be replaced.
