sr5 gauge cluster

Quick question. Will an sr5 cluster from an 83 physically fit and will it work in an 80 without changing the complete dash? Got a hell of a deal on the cluster and the under dash gauges if so!! Thanks guys n gals!!

Physically, they're exactly the same, same fit, dimensions, and screw holes.
Electronically, I think earlier units came with a round plug, and by 83 the system had changed to three smaller rectangular plugs.

Plus the 79-81 sr5 clusters were way cooler looking than the 82/83 anyways.

IMO.

I don't know about all that now. 79-81 looks like space ship controls or something lol.

Exactly! I think Big Mike over at Marlin Crawler calls it the F-14 fighter jet cluster or something like that.

Very round, and having the tach in the middle is cool.

Speaking of '81 sr5 gauges....
Any idea what these two wires control?

I'm thinking the backlights for the speedo.
Given the angle of the top of the unit in your hands and the proximity for the cable input, I can't imagine an early SR5 having any electronics inside the speedometer housing other than a lamp.

I'd thought that was an idiot light.

How about taking the unit apart and seeing what the contacts tie into?

I understand. Just don't go too far into it. I would just pull those two green plugs and the two screws securing it to the housing. Doing only enough to get a look at the speedo shouldn't cause any trouble with the rest of the unit.
Good luck!

I've bought a few odds and ends from Rancho Toyota Parts and their neighbor Cordova Truck Dismantlers. Good people all around.
If we have a parts resource thread, it might be wise to add their site to that list instead of on another thread though.

The two wires connect to the speedometer/ odometer gauge. But no clue what function they actually provide power too.

In the meantime, to get more attention, rather than burying your request in a thread someone else started, you could start your own thread and have a request in the title for someone with an 81 FSM to help you.

I've scanned and posted pages from my 83 FSM for people with the same year truck who don't have a FSM. But if I had a 81 FSM, I wouldn't think to check this thread...

Good luck!
