sputters uphill

sputters uphill
79 stock 20r
so my truck has been running rich but just recently it started sputtering only when i go uphill. it stutters bad, loses like all of its "power" and if i keep on the gas it backfires.... i got a carb rebuild kit for it, think this will fix the problem? i havn't gotten around to taking the carb off yet, just been driving my jeep but i want to get back in the yota! help please
