somewhat urgent electrical problem
hey yall when it comes to electrical stuff in these toyotas im not quite up to par.but my wifes got a 1980 toyota 4x4 i was replaceing somethin under the seat when i saw that something had caught fire under there.i pulled the seat and there was a green connector that had melted along with some papersthat were charred.so anyways i took all the elec.tape off and found there were 4 wires (a red, black, yellowwith red stripe, and a white with black stripe)the only place i can see where the 2 colored wires go is to that little computer deal under the dash ...anyways can someone maybe tell me what these wires do and really where the hot wires comein from so i can not have a fire .and if i disconnected ther hot will it affect the other wires that hook to the computer. thanks yall sorry i ran a lil long.oh its her daily driver ha

they all go to that computer deal except the black oneand i think the white and black one could go to the ignition maybe the clips that were melted had a green clip with the red wire and the yellow red stripe to it and the other was a clear clip with the black and the white with black stripe

You did not say which side of the cab the wires / plug were on but if I had to guess it would be the drivers side and it is the seat belt warning circuit. The wires should go to the seat belt warning relay. Does the seat belt warning light come on? Do you have chimes or a sound when you put the key in and turn on the ignition?

yeh one of them went into the seat belt receiver part .would a short in this make the truck run like crap?caue it does sometimes and its irregular like some kinds of electrical short .should i just unplug it ..welli already did sor should i trace those wires down and completely get rid of it.there is no seat belt warning light that comes on. and the only chimes is a buzzer when you put the key in.

The power supply for the seat belt warning relay comes from the Dome Light fuse. Does your Dome light come on when you open a door? If it does then just trace the burnt wires that are under the seat until you find an unburned section, separate the burned wires individually to that point and tape each wire individually then tape as a bundle. Disconect the wire from the seat belt unit. If the Dome light does not operate, check the fuse and follow the previous procedure. This circuit should not effect how your truck runs but is an indication that your truck wiring has problems due to the previous owner, age, neglect, etc.
