shifter boot replacement

Hi, is anyone replaced shifter boot ? Is it supposed to stretch over the thicker part of the lever or the lever can be unscrewed ? It seems that it will not go out without heating ..

It just slides on from the top once you remove the knob.

I find some silicone spray helps it slide.:jessica:

Thanks a lot ! Good that I asked. I smell exhaust fumes in the cabin and I think it is due to torn shift boot. From posts I found It seems new from dealer is more than $100 so I patched up the old one. I shall see if my repair will hold putting it on

New guy here (well, I've posted a time or two ages ago under another name, that I forgot the login details for)

My truck didn't have any shift boots when I got it. Just a plate of aluminum from were they cut the tunnel while putting in a 5spd. I had exhaust fumes in the cab too.

Bought some vinyl, needle & thread, some stainless screws and washers, used the aluminum plate from a previous owner and this is what I came up with.
