re-gearing with a 20r

i am looking to possibly re-gear my 80. it has the stock 4.375 gears ( to my knowledge). i have 235/85/16s (or 32") on there now and now power is my problem. i did the calculator: new tire size (32) x old gear ratio (4.375) / old tire size (28) = 5. Should i go with the 4.88 or the 5.28 for the new gears?

my truck originally had the 4:37, and it did ok untill I got 33" tires then I started burning up clutches. Now I have 4:88 and they work well I think I would get the next lower set if I did it again just because I Rarely drive it on the pavement except to and from trails. my max cruising speed is 60 and I could probably push it to 65 for a short jaunt. I only have a 4 speed tranny

I would suggest you got to 5.29's. 4.88's would work but if you ever decide to go w/ bigger tires cheaper to do it once....

I agree with ocdropzone , and have been down that road before ..

4:88 's are the gear of choice for your tire size .. but 9 times out of ten , It'll be driven for a year or so , and bigger tires are wanted .. I did that (the 4:88's ) and drove it for a year , then went with 36's ARB's , and 5:29's .. lucky me I was able to sell the 4:88's
