L50 and L52 are interchangable/no mods to swap. The L52 is supposed to be the stronger of the two.

Depending on what you're going for, you could just try to find a used one. Marlin is the leader, probably, in rebuilt Toyota transmissions, but you pay the price for them!

I would get a used one

Rebuilding them is very doable, but still quite tedious. I decided to just search and search for an L52 instead of working on one.

If I was to buy a new/rebuilt one it would only come from marlin crawler, because trannies/cases is what they specialize in, and they go over everything. But 83 is right they are expensive like at least a grand

Marlin sells them, but they charge out the ass for shipping, and they are REAL picky with cores. Its a gamble wether or not you will get your core refund back. Find one on craigslist or junk yard, buy kit on ebay, overhaul yourself. You can find them all day long for $300 or so. Kit is around $150. Here is a link bro.

Are you replacing a busted 5 speed, or are you evicting an old 4 speed?

I'm not sure if I have the L50 or L52, and mine needs a rebuild. Is there a way to tell which one I have externally? I swapped a 5 speed into my truck, but was not told which model it was.

I read that on the nosecone of an L52 you can find a small oil weep hole, the L50 has none, do a search on the marlin crawler forums. Lots of info to be found there.

The only way to ID an L50 vs L52 is the input bearing. Take off the 6 12mm head bolts that hold the bearing cover on and read what the bearing has on it. L50 has a ball bearing or roller bearing option, L52 uses 80mm ball bearing.

I think that you're right. At one point there was a tranny discussion that Big Mike from Marlin posted in, and he mentioned something about a weep hole being the only way, without tearing it apart, to ID an L50/L52.

I don't feel like searching for that thread, though...you could try searching his profile for his posts, though.

from a couple of years ago:

Marlin said he'll simply reach into the bellhousing and grab the nose cone, and immediately he'll know if it's a L50 or L52 if he feels that hole or not.

That is much better than removing the nose cone, so definitely cool, thanks Marlin!
