Ignition Switch - Truck randomly dies

I was fixing some stuff in my truck to day and it does not seem possible for me to fix one issue without causing at least 1 or 2 more. Got the odometer fixed today, put it back together now i am having issues with my ignition. I traced it down to the white "thing" that is on the driver side (non-key side) of the ignition. Mine is janky and will cut in and out, when it goes out it cuts ALL POWER and my truck stalls out till i give it a few good smacks, or fumble with it for a few seconds. I have to drive on I-5 tomorrow and i really don't want it to crap out on me/

Anybody know an P/N for this piece, or if they are known for problems like this? I would like to get the whole dang thing replaced if possible (ignition, switch "thing", and key set.

i bought a lock cylinder for what was supposed to fit an 82, was far too long, now its in the parts bin.

Here is what i am working with;

Most of my issues seem to be steaming from this bottom blue wire. It seems a bit loose, but hardly, and all the sodder is still there.

Red face

It is the electrical part of the ignition switch .

I suppose after years they can wear out .

The thing is with these trucks one has no way of knowing just what parts could be from different years.

Or did you just get a ignition switch boxed wrong??

I got the ignition (part the key goes in) it's almost a prefect fit, but might be a bit too long.

Anybody know anything about the extra wire that goes from the electrical switch to the part the key goes in? Mine has one, but the replacement parts do not. what is it, and do i need it?

This is the one i think i need. http://images.wrenchead.com/smartpag...A2011410-1.jpg

FYI there are 3 different ignition cylinders
1-With tilt wheel & with steering lock
2-With tilt wheel & without steering lock
3-Without tilt wheel & without steering lock

Pick which setup you have and go with the correct cylinder - they are not interchangeable

I just replaced the one on my pickup. Mine didn't want to turn the engine over without wiggling the key. It's an easy job. I got my switch from NAPA and it fitted perfectly, but I don't know the part number and yours might be different anyway.

I do not have a tilt wheel, so therefore i should ASSUME that i don't have a wheel lock either? Anybody got a P/N for this specific one? Or know the best place to order one from?

Hey, new member here, but I'm in the same boat, just bought this for my 82'

The last one on the page is no steering lock/no tilit...I just bought yesterday.
Last week I bought the first one on page....didn't fit.
Should get part in Thursday, I'll let you know if I did right, this time.

Please do let me know if that works for you. i would prefer not to spend $60, but if that's what it takes. Wish i could just find a used one at a yard or something.

Presto!! Got bingo, was a tic to get key in right selector position for it too accept.(Accessory) I did put a bit of graphite on cylinder in key location & sprayed Corrosion X on the internal terminals for control.

& Yes $60 + $8s&h is a bit steep, but better than paying/returning/shipping wrong part for 30-40 bucks & $90 @ local twilight(auto) zone & ($104)oreilys......all had wrong cross-reference numbers.

have a good one

The blue/red wire is the ACC wire at the Ignition switch, that powers the cigarette light and radio fuses. The battery power wire to Ignition switch probably is black/red through a Green fusible link.

Huh? I thought steering lock was federally mandatory since 1960-something?

A lot of retailers and such say steering lock, but it isn't actually what locks the steering wheel. It's the annoying button lock on the column that you have to push to remove the key from the ignition.

Ohh. I know those and yes, they're rubbish. Glad I don't have one.

(I don't have a steering column lock, either. Among the more terrifying moments of my life was when one malfunctioned and locked up on me as I was driving. Ever since then I've disabled them on every vehicle I keep.)

So if i have that "annoying button" to remove the key, then i do indeed have a steering lock? But i don't have a tilt wheel...
