Ignition puzzle
I posted a few days ago that I installed an MSD-5 and blaster coil due to losing all spark. Up till now everything has been hunky-dory....engine fires within a couple of cranks, runs smoother, and my mileage has jumped up to @25.
Unfortunately I lost all spark again just yesterday on my way to my friends house (120 miles away). No freakin clue what happened. I futzed around with it for a bit, checking connections, and such, and got it running again....but it stumbled a few time before I got it to his place. Just driving along and it would lose spark.. tehn kick back on and run fine.
I'm at a complete loss. Ignition fuse is fine, all connections are tight, no frayed wires (that I know of), dizzy, coil and MSD box are all new.
I really need some opinions here as I'm needing to go home on sunday, and I really don't wanna get stranded halfway back with no spark.
HELP!

What about the electrical part of your ignition switch, it is a switch and after 20 + years of use they can go bad, like if you hit a small bump in the road or just vibration in general and it looses contact and your truck dies ?. im just throwing out ideas here, if all the msd ignition parts are new and your sure there are no bad wires that power the ignition system, then what else could it be ?.
one question, did the msd ignition upgrade make a noticable difference in performance or gase mileage ?.

You know, I actually thought about the physical switch after posting this. Tomorrow, (when it's not raining) I'm going to go hard wire a toggle switch to the ignition JUST to eliminate that possibility.
And to answer your question, YES. My mileage is now in the 25 MPG ballpark (though I must be honest and admit to messing with the timing and mixture while I was wrenching), the engine seems to run smoother, and it usually fires on the first rotation of the crank now.....something it's NEVER done before.

I had trouble getting my Subaru running when I put a new distributor in it. It turned out that the gap between the senor on the distributor module and the rotor was not adjusted. Some of the older Toyotas have gaps that can be adjusted like that. Maybe yours is slightly out of adjustment and only works part of the time. I remember seeing the adjustment procedure in a Chilton repair manual.
