igniter with carburetor and points?
i'm trying to gather all the spare parts i need for extended road touring, got most everything covered, except this "thing" mounted on top of the coil(see attached), which seems to be a "igniter assembly" -- i thought only toyotas with the electronic ignition/fuel injection had these, cause i'm stock with carburetor and points -- anyway, if this is an igniter, i've heard of them breaking down, and so i'll need to find a spare one(i already got a spare resistor)
thanks, roky

You really have points? My 78 didn't, but I don't know when they stopped using them.
Yes, ignitor, or ignition module. They do occasionally go out. They're very expensive. Junkyard would be the place to look, unless you have an extra $300 laying around.
For what it's worth, I drove a 78 Chinook all over most of the country for 2 years and didn't carry a single spare part.

yes, it changed in 78 -- 75-77 they had a combo of points and electronic ignition -- but i've now found out(on the yahoo chinook group) that unlike the 78-up igniter, the points igniter can be replaced with a condenser:from "Petersen's Mini-Truck Repair Manual" C1978 ISBN 0-8227-5016-3
Talking about the Toyota Hilux '75-'77 ignition...
"Unlike fully electronic ignitions, which will not fire if the
electronic module fails, the transistorized ignition can be operated
even if the igniter breaks down. In this type of emergency situation,
you need only to connect a lead between the coil and distributor as
shown in Fig 4-22, installing a condenser with a capacity of .22
microfarads in the lead."
