idling high

my 79 pickup is idling pretty high. sometimes if i hit the gas at a stop it will drop to what seems like a good speed or really low and run real rough. but once i touch the gas again it speeds up again. does anyone know how i can fix this. I just bought my truck a few months ago from a friend and i'm loving it. I'm also new here.

Get a can of carb cleaner and spray the linkages on the back of the carb for starters. Also, does pulling the gas back with your foot decrease the idle? If so, it may be the throttle linkage hanging up. Post back with results, good luck.

yea, i've also moved the linkages around to work it in there. A shot of compressed air afterwards wouldn't hurt either.
