Here's the deal, I'm gen X, have no attention span and need constant entertainment, and can't get a cd player for my truck! Gah! So it's not that bad, but I do enjoy listening to something other than the hum of the tires, and don't know where to go for a cd player. Crutchfield said that nothing they have will fit. Thoughts? Is it bs or just ignorance? Can I put a normal head unit in there or is it genuinely strangely shaped? Can I get a burger and fries with that?

 

maybe a mp3 player and some speakers taped to the dash ?

 

if you're concerned about keeping it looking stock, get an FM transmitter. If not, get DIN dimensions and saw + zall = Perfect fit.

 

so what do you drive

 

go to circuit city or somethinthey should have plenty of head units and little speakers for a decent price

 

im not sure what model you have but on my 85 single cab i took the pocket under the original stereo mount off and put in a 7 inch flush touchscreen. double DIN (that means it is twice as tall as a standard deck.) also have a kenwood excelon deck that i fabbed into the glove box. i wired 2 toggles for the hot's on each deck that i can independently turn on.
dvd player is hooked up to the 6x9's and one sub for movies.
the other deck pushes all of it for music.

AND it all fits in the cab and i have plenty of room to put the seat back

Circuit City sawed a big 'ol hole in my dash (and cut out the reinforcing bar behind the radio) when they put in my old CD player. Which sucks, because now there's all kind of rattling when I wheel. Also, it got broken into and stolen anyway.

Now I have a Tuffy console, and my stereo is in there. It's bolted through the floor into the frame, so can't be removed unless the top is unlocked, or the thief has a lot of time and a plasma cutter. It's really nice to have a secure lock box when I'm hunting, fishing, or at the local watering hole.

yea. ill see if i can find a picture of it.. i have the whole system out right now cause a crackhead was bustin windows on my street at night. and cause my truck is in the shop gettin a marlin tranny.

sheesh 85, so you like your system eh? I guess I should have clarified, mines an 83, so no little plastic thing down by the stick that fits perfectly and has a pocket. The thing looks DIN sized, but I havn't tried much, and this is one of the first places I go for advice on my truck. Guess I'll be pokin around. That Tuffy console looks like the cats though... and cupholders, I don't have any of 'em

 

It's not DIN sized. It was designed for small-chassis 2-shaft receivers, and I haven't seen one of those for 15 years.

The Tuffy box takes a standard DIN-sized chassis, and is pretty deep, too.

I've got an older bro (really good friend) who is really good with systems and installs them locally.
Last year i got a couple subs and an amp and he showed me how to hook em up.
well i wrecked that truck and took the system and installed it all by myself (in my new truck)
Pretty nicely if you ask me.
So i fire it up and the amps getting no power..wtf.
so that night i pick him up from work he looks it over, turns out the one cord i was missing was the darn remote cord from the headunit to the amp

 

put a pic up of whatr it looks like. you can always geta box made for it that looks like its apart of the truck

does it have a tape player?? if so grab your iPod and a cheapo tape adapter from Walmart like that.

 

If you take your time you can fit a unit in the dash that will look good and be secure. Remove the plastic and figure out what size hole you will need to fit the unit in, cut it out and then take sheet metal and build a bracket with an opening cut out to fit stereo and then attach to the metal that is left. Sheet metal screws or welded in place. From the firewall attach a strap to secure the back of the unit with. Basically you are just fab'ing a new metal support for the unit. Not a major deal and if it it done right it will look good in the existing plastic and will not rattle. It just takes a little time and thought.

That's a random picture. But mine is pretty much the same, but blue (not quite as clean, though). I cut 6.5" holes in the doors for components and blocked off the 4" speaker holes.
