Exclamation HELP: Must swap rear axles between 82 5 lug 1/2 ton dually & 83 6 lug 1 ton dually

I need to swap REAR AXLES between an 82 (5 speed) and an 83 (4 speed). The 82 has the 5 lug rear axle and the 83 has the 6 lug 1 Ton rear axle. (see photos below). They are both duallys.

Will this be a clean swap between the two vehicles? Someone told me it will be and someone else said the brackets for the shocks are reversed on the 83 1 ton. Anyone know how a swap like this will go? If both vehicles are parked next to each other and jacked up, do you know how long something like this should take? Any anticipated problems?

Thank you very much!

Hopefully you'll get some responses here, but if this is, as I'm assuming, for a motorhome, toyotamotorhomes.org is a good resource for this. They even have a toyota motorhome axle FAQ, since there were such problems with non full floating duallys from the earlier 80's.

There are people there who have done this swap.

You are right that it is for a Toyota motorhome, and yes I did ask at that forum but thought I'd check here too since this forum is a little more techie and I was here anyway asking about a carburator. Thanks.

Yep.

The general trend on this forum leans more towards techie stuff, you're right. But when you get into 2wd, dually stuff, the knowledge base drops off fast...beleive me, I know. I've got a 78 Chinook, and there's nobody here with much help when it comes to that. 20R engines people know about, they know about carbs and all that stuff. But as far as 2wd axles, duallys, and the camper itself, there aren't any experts over here that I've found.

There are one or three people on the toyota motorhomes site who are at least at tech-oriented as people here, but with specific toyota motorhome axles knowledge.

And I've been trying to log into that same Toyota motorhome forum to clarify something about the axle swap and for some reason its not letting me log in today. I'm not sure if its a system-wide issue with their forum so I sent an email to their Admin so am waiting to hear back...

Thanks again for the info.

The forum can be goofy...it's regularly a little slow, and I can't even log into it at work anymore because it's been spammed/hacked too many times and my IT people keep quarantining my computer...

But on my Mac at home I have no problems. I did just look today, and it logged me out somehow, and there's definitely something funky going on.

I'd try it again tomorrow. Either spammers hate Toyota motorhomes, or the owner of that site needs more security.

Yes it (the toyota motorhome forum) is slow to load but this is the first time I haven't been able to log in. Thanks for trying because at least I know now that I wasn't kicked out of there!
