Tinkering with my project '82 today and saw that I have a bit of a problem. The welded nut inside the frame rail used to attach the crossmember has broken off. I fished out the remnants of the bolt and the broken nut, and it looks like some jackass down the line crossthreaded the bolt, causing the nut to break loose. This apparently happened twice, as I found the same thing on the other side of the crossmember. Any thoughts on how to fix this since the nut is inside the frame rail?

Any thoughts guys? Worst case scenario I guess I could tack weld a couple of spots around the effected end of the crossmember.

 

It seems the frame is in really good condition. Maybe tap the existing hole and run a good bolt in it? Looks like there is plenty of meat there. Just a thought.

 

It depends just what your skill level is

Then just how fancy or picky you are.

Weld nuts should be able to be found in M12 x 1.25 if not you can go to 1/2"

weld the new nuts in and your done .

I have used this method many times

Another option is to drill and tap a piece of 1/4 " or 3/8" plate large enough to do both holes with the caged nuts.

Cut the section of frame out weld the new piece of plate in.

It all depends just how fancy and picky you are .

Then how many Hard core impacts your truck is subject to .makes a big differece

If this is a mall crawler I would not be to worried about just having 3 bolts

 

Unfortunately, I'm definitely on the lower end of the skill spectrum. This project is resto/weekend ride, so there is no crawling in its immediate future. I was wondering about the three bolt option, but it my cause my OCD to kick in. Assuming I could I could find a bolt to fit, I like flg8r22's idea as well. Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses.
