Chain of events...

At least you aren't getting discouraged. Yeah, you replace one part of the system with a stronger part, and the old weaker parts will start failing.

Good work! That's a fun project, you're replacing most fairly cheap and easy parts, and that truck just keeps getting better and better.

yeah the truck was a delicate ecosystem of worn out parts held together with 32 years of grease and dirt... I expected these chains of events to occur.

fortunately, i have a FLAP that's 1 mile away and has this stuff in stock for good prices.

the only disheartening discovery so far is that the diff is shot. turning either axle by hand yields a tic tic tic tic tic - probably a broken tooth or worn spider gear. I'm assuming that just about any 4-cyl 2WD diff will swap in?

Not sure what diffs will fit in your truck. I don't know the 2wd's as well. I'm guessing that any 2wd 22R/E will fit, though you'll either need to drill new bolt holes for the flange if you go with a later model, or buy something like this. Not sure if they work for 2wd.

well, I'm gonna casually start looking at the local pick a part. at least yanking a diff is easy on a truck like this. heck, nothing's overly difficult on this thing.

Nope

I was really surprised and happy at how easy it was to swap my rear diff. The only aggravating part was drilling the new bolt holes in the flange...I went through a couple batteries on my hand drill. With a better stocked shop and a drill press I'm sure it would be cake. And I got the diff from someone on Marlin's site for the price of shipping.

I wouldn't bet on it, not completely anyway. My brake booster popped a couple years ago. When it got changed I drained almost a full quart of brake fluid out of it

what did you use to paint the valve cover. I like the texture on it. Best one I've seen by far.
