Distributor Pickup Sensor Info
Hey friends,
Have an 83 SR5 4x4 pickup. Have aftermarket distributor. Service manual says that resistance for the distributor pickup coil should be like 130-180 ohms. Mine reads 560 ohms. I ordered a Cardone 84-731 Distributor off amazon and pickup reads 600 ohms.
Next, I ordered two seperate distributor pickup coils that claim to fit 1983 but both seem to be larger in size than pickup coils in both of my distributors.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

According to Cardone that distributor works for 1982 to 1990 22R: https://www.cardone.com/product/distributor-84-731
The 130 - 180 Ohms spec for the Pickup Coil is pretty standard on 20R's & 22R's. Dumb question: Are you sure you're measuring the resistance correctly? Ohm meter on 200 Ohm range, probing both terminals on the plug?
Did you check the Ohm spec on the 2 other coils you ordered? What do they read? What make/brand & part number are those two other coils?
The only aftermarket pickup coil I am aware of is the BeckArnley 1800118, which should fit.

I sure hope the one I ordered fits. It's on the way. The truck wouldn't start when warm at first, then it started dying going down the road. When cool, it measured 185 ohms. I let it idle in the driveway until it died after about 5 minutes. It measured 16.8M ohms at that point.

I ended up ordering two different aftermarket pickup coils, and the truck wouldn't run at all with either. Toyota wants $220 for one. I ended up finding a used distributor at a boneyard 60 miles from me for $50. I have to recommend car-part.com for looking for boneyard parts.
