creepin outta 3rd

my 81 with a 4 speed won't stay in 3rd unless you are giving it gas, it doesn't pop out just slowly creeps out so you have to hold it in. Is this just the linkage or the gear going out?

I believe the first place you'd want to start is verifying that it has good clean gear oil in it and plenty of it before moving on to some wild diagnostics.

sounds like worn dogs on the gears, they've become rounded over and no longer lock together. time for new gears
