Does anyone have any idea where to find a fuel tank for an 82 4x4 long bed? I heard they were discontinued, but I can't find anything aftermarket either. In dire need as the old one is in very bad shape, tried cleaning it several times but about a month later, another fuel filter plugged up. Please help! Thanks!
Also, if anyone else has run into this problem, and had to Fab or rig something, what did you do?

 

You're going to have to search junkyards, online and physical. Either that or buy a generic aftermarket that's more or less the right dimensions and fabricate a way to make it fit.

 

That's what I was afraid of. They are so hard to find in my area. Guess I'll have to figure something custom out.

If you have no choice but to deal with yours, I have successfully cleaned older motorbike tanks by putting drywall screws or small #3 rock (pebbles) in the tank and adding a little water then shaking it every which a way. Make sure and flush it out over and over after you dump out the screws then dry it.

 

I have heard Colorado is the place to find parts for these. I guess I'll look for a plane ticket🙃

 

Toyospearo is right, the pebble method works well, just takes a lot of turning & shaking for the rocks to knock loose the rust inside. I've done this before but use a few gallons of cheap dollar store white vinegar with the rocks. Helps break down the rust & etch the inside surface. Once clean & dry I seal up the inside of the tank with a liner material like KREEM or POR-15 gas tank sealer. Just pour in & turn over & over to coat the inside completely. Many a rusty gas tank has been saved this way.

83 is also right, there are aftermarket tanks for Toyota pickups out there that might fit. Search around a bit on for anything up to a 1987 pickup & you'll find em available new, made by a company calls Spectra Premium. Longbed 17 gallon versions are out there. The tanks themselves didn't change too much over time so it might bolt up. Only changes I've seen are Toyota changing the hole that the gas pickup stem goes in (early 6 or 7 hole design vs later 5 hole). You could do some visual comparison on the hole layout at least.

I usually use a small chain and shake it up. Saw a video where a guy strapped the tank to a 4wheeler tire and let it run to clean the tank.

I have a tank from an 81 4x4 longbed with the filler neck cut. Also have one from a short bed still on the truck. Not sure if they are clean on the inside as I have not used either. Im located in central tx.

 

What does your tank look like? Getting a short bed tank would work i'm sure.

I had bought wrong tank for my Toyota and upon inspection I could have made it work. Your other option is buy a fuel cell. Just google the dimensions and something will come up. That would be my choice. As a last option you could also build one. I built one for a OT vehicle. Just bent up some 14 gauge steel and welded the seams, added filler neck(exhaust pipe) and hole for sending unit. If you fab tank be sure to pressure test for leaks before you install. I had no leaks but my boy(Boilermaker) welded the seams.
