Alternator Problems

Hey guys just need a little help.

I got a replacement alternator for my 82 pickup, 4x4. I got the alternator from Auto Zone. I said at the store and on the paper that comes with the new alternator that its for 81 - 84 Toyota pickups but the plugs don’t match up. I wasn't to concerned about that at first, because the new alternator came with a little harness that I as just going to splice into. But I was reading on the paper that comes with this alternator and it says that if my truck has a 5 prong plug for the external regulator (and it does) that I can't use this alternator because its an A-type circuit or something and it needs to be a 6 prong plug (B-type circuit). I don’t understand all this why would Toyota make to different circuits for the same model truck? Does any one know much about this and maybe throw me some wisdom?

Thanks
Kris

I wouldnt trust autozone parts, 3 times straight they sent me universal parts instead of the appropriate one for the rig. I just finished putting one in my truck from napa pluged right in

You can search around here for GM one-wire, as I understand it's a pretty simple setup, but if you're determined to go with a "stock" alternator, you might have some figuring to do.

It may be that you just need a new voltage regulator to match the alternator?

Yeah I know autozone stuff blows. haha. But the alternator was cheap, it was like $30 after tax. I already put it in, I just dont want to take it back out if I don't have too.

Search around here, there's some info I think. It should be just 1 wire back to the battery if I recall correctly.
