83 pickup fuel gage question

My fuel gage has never worked since I got the truck. I'm sick of running out and keeping track of mileage. Do I have to replace the fuel sending unit to fix the fuel gage? Dose anyone know any little tricks to rig it to work? I was also wondering the tank size or if I should replace the sending unit?? It seems to be 13.5 gallons?

I have move this thread to the appropriate section - Pre-84 Tech.

As for your fuel sending unit, I had the same problem - the sending unit arm was corroded and frozen at 3/4 tank. Luckily for me, I was able to find a brand new original Toyota fuel sending unit after searching for a little over a year. Chances are that you will be HIGHLY unlikely to be as lucky as I was in finding a new one, but there are some used ones out there. Before I procured the new sending unit, I was able to free up the original fuel sender and it worked well for me. I hit it with a soft wire wheel and some WD-40 to get it as clean and rust free as possible. Just be sure not to jack up the resistance coil or you will not get an accurate reading.

Cool thanks. Ya you probably can tell I'm new on here technology has never been a strong point for me. Hence one of the reasons for loving Toyotas. I wanted to know about the gas gage before I started braking anything.
