82 22re fueling problem

I'm new to the toyota world. Picked up a rock crawler for cheap. Has a power issue, misfires every time at start up occasionally runs smooth when warm. Will miss if I hammer down the gas or start to die if i just slightly push the gas in Obvious fuel leak out of the fuel pressure damper in the front of the rail. I have to prime the engine every time it start her. Like push push push and hold the gas turn the key priming the engine. PO says he just replaced throttle position sensor and fuel pump. The truck seems to run well won't idle out on me, but when there's say less than 1/4 tank of gas the engine will hold at a certain rpm and refuses to go up any higher and I can sometimes solve by feathering the gas. 22re engine out of an 85 4runner. I'm 19 pretty broke but have a professional mechanic as a neighbor who I apprentice. Did I get in wayyyy over my head this time?

Sometimes it's hard to say with engine swaps since it could be something with the swap itself. If it is missing then I would check the obvious first - spark plugs, wires, distributor and timing. Then if it isn't that, I would check the fuel delivery - fuel filters, fuel pump, fuel lines and injectors. While there are some 22RE guys in this section of the forum, most of us are carb or V6 swap guys (swapping from a 22R to a 22RE isn't really worth the work or money) so you might want to drop a line in the 84-85 section or the 86-95 section to get your problem out to guys who may know your engine a little better.

The 85 22re wont be a problem. What is confusing me is it sounds like it is a fuel injected 82 truck if I am reading it right. If that is the case, it depends on how well they did the swap. You might try adding more info about what all has been done to your motor.

I am sure someone as done a fuel injected motor on one of these first gen trucks but I haven't seen any on here or aware of any. If you are taking over someone elses build you could have your hands full.

First thing I would check/replace is fuel filter, then other obvious things like mentioned before (spark plugs, wires, rotor and cap), make sure there is no vacuum leaks. Does is seem to run rich or lean when it doesn't run good?

It's been desmogged reeeeeks of gas 24/7. Has a vac leak between the intake mani and the intake hose! I can hear it whistle so that's getting replaced today with a PVC intake from ace hardware. Ordered distributor cap rotor spark plugs and wires from rock auto. Along with the fuel damper to kill the fuel leak.
