Question 71 Hilux Stereo Install HELP!

Hello all,

Noob here , I recently purchased a 71 Hilux and I love it.
There was no stereo to speak of in it, so I'm trying to install a new Kenwood unit.

Here is the dash configuration.

As you can see, the dash curves and there is nothing in the hole to mount a 'cage' to.
The hole is almost a DIN and a half size, which causes some issues, as the stereo I purchased is a DIN size.

I don't know if anyother year models have a dash like this, as I can't find a kit for this year model.

I'm hoping to find a member who has overcome this issue somehow.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That will require a custom bracket/filler combo/rear support. Not that hard if you take the time to do it right. I did a similar install in a 64 Impala. I made a 3 dimensional cardboard template (use shoebox thickness cardboard, masking tape, an a razor knife). Once you have a piece that fills the space nicely, you glass over the template with cloth and fiberglass resin. When that's finished, you sand the rough spots out and finish it with body filler, sand that out to your satisfaction, test fit again. Then paint it. When its completed, you simply cut your single DIN or Double DIN opening to fit DIN bracket, paint it, and install it. Badabadabing. You'll have better luck searching car stereo sites, as what you need will not be available anywhere; custom built only.

This is an extreme version of what I'm talking about; the process is similar but on a much larger scale-

If you were making stereo install kit's would you market one for '71 Toyotas? Too limited of a market..

follow willcipher's plan with the cardboard template and if you don't want to use fiberglass try this route:
transfer your template to some 1/8" aluminum that you can cut with a jigsaw or similar tool. get a piece big enough that you can tweak it to match the slide curve of your dash before you cut it to fit just slightly bigger than your opening (maybe leave 1/2" overlap)
Use some nice looking stainless screws to secure it to the dash.

I had a 83 that had the stem/knob stereo in the dash. DIN would not fit so I blanked off the dash installation and bought a console from 4 Wheel Parts (I have bucket seats). I removed the cup holder and the opening was perfect for a double DIN. I bought a adapter kit from Walmart that goes from double DIN to single DIN and installed the radio in the console. This may not be what you want but just a suggestion.
