1st gen topper
does any body know where I can find a Toyota 1st gen short bed topper for cheap I would love to have one but dont know where to look! I want ether fiberglass/plastic or aluminum new or used andything will help thanks

Find a Brahma or Bronco or the like. What you want is a molded thermoplastic topper, not a fiberglass or aluminum one.
Why?
Because thermoplastic is light (unlike fiberglass) and tough (unlike both the others).

how about a home made topper anybody done that... I had a friend build one out of plywood and it wasn't to bad but kinda heavy... but what about some kind of flexible plastic on a conduit frame?

No offense, but i think that would look ugly.
I hate seeing mexicans with campers that dont match trucks, and while most of them just need the topper for work stuff, I would never buy one that didnt match the color and body lines on my particular truck.
Theres my change, i didnt go to church this morning so i had some left over

There are a ton of brands, but our early beds seems to have different dimensions than even later '80s beds, and it's been hard for me to find one that fits. Most are slightly too long and wide, and stick up a bit too high above the cab (in case you care about gas mileage). Maybe going new though, you can find something. Our beds just don't seem to match up well with other small truck beds.
Craigslist has worked the best for me, though, too.

Yeah, totally. Did you check all those links Nico posted? The one that shows the blue topper on a toyota that has a measuring tape photo? I don't know for sure where he's measuring from, but he's getting about 74-75" for lenth. I get about 73" on my 1st gen short bed. The truck he's measuring is a second gen. I took a shell of an '86 that fit pretty well, and put it on a '93 and it fit pretty well. But I'll bet that shell wouldn't fit my '83 very well. The more I look, the more I think it's going to be really hard to find a shell that will fit my truck well. And unless you go custom I wonder if any new manufacturers make a topper that will fit our off-size beds.

I'll bet that things gotta fit then. If I get 73", you get 74.5" and he's getting 75"? That's got to fit. Of course setting it on your bed is the only way to know for sure...
edit: well after looking again I guess he's closer to 75-76...but, I really don't know how close you're going to get..

If it's too long, drill out the rivets at the leading edge, take out the window, sawzall off the offending 1-3", drill new holes, pop in new rivets (or use T-nuts with Loctite), and you're in business.
