1983 22r Rich & Rough

Hello all,
Recently got this '83 and previous owner had vacuum lines incorrectly connected. Idled rough, had to crank forever + pump gas pedal for it to start, and stumbled on its face when I floored it.
So, besides general maintenance, I rerouted using the FSM diagram for '83 CA emissions. Now the car starts up with less cranking, runs great for around 5 seconds, but then gets choppy and runs rich (faint black smoke out exhaust) and very rough, shaking motor side to side. The float level is slightly high in the sight glass, albeit not completely overfilled but definitely not centered. When I get on the gas it runs smooth enough, mainly just a rough idle.
Any advice of how to diagnose would be much appreciated. I am happy to answer any questions as well. Thanks!

Check the AAP on the carb. There are test procedures in the FSM. I think the big tell is if you pull the vacuum line and there is gas in the line. That isn't in the FSM.

Thanks for the response, prcnctoyo.
There was fuel inside the vac line connecting the AAP so I replaced the diaphragm/hose. Now the car dies instantly after starting, so I just plugged the AAP and it runs much smoother now.
I wonder what is causing instant death with the AAP hooked up, but this'll do for now.
Appreciate it,
John.
