1982 SR5 Longbed w/ Moonroof?
Hey folks new to the forum here. Thanks to whoever takes the time to read this and respond. I picked up my 1982 SR5 Longbed w/ 22r motor back in january for $500 from my roommate, she got a sweet 86 sr5 1 ton w/ the 22r motor to replace that one. I have replaced a few things on it such as the battery, alternator, and thermostat. Upon removing the whole intake housing I found a bolt stuffed down into the intake hose for what i believe is the EGR valve. No one I know has any clue as why someone would do this. Old ghetto fix or maybe some sabotage, any ideas? Also, my model of truck has the moon roof on it, but everywhere I look online I cannot find a picture of one. It definitely is factory, and the cab is the original cab. Only fender and bed are replacements. Has anyone seen one before, or have some insight as to how many trucks they made with the moon roof option? Once again thanks to whoever reads this and throws in some input, I really like the truck, old, and gets a lot of attention. Thanks!

Yea, the moonroof is not uncommon, at least up here in Canada, on 4wd models. I have two equipped with the moonroof. On 2wd not sure I've seen one personally, though there are not many of the 2wds around here. As for the bolt in the hose, if the truck runs well, and it is a budget ride, I wouldn't mess with it. Up here in Canada the emissions equipment on these trucks is very simple. In 21 years of driving various pre '84s I've had close to nil for carburation issues. The couple californian models I've seen up here look like spaghetti under the hood in comparison. Maybe if you want to put a but of money into it desmogging is an option .....

Stuffed down which hose? Like a small bolt in a large hose, or a bolt just the right size to plug the hose? Seems strange someone would only do it to one hose, but it sounds like the start of just capping off the EGR. I definitely had a truck that I just stuck golf tees into the vacuum hoses on the egr, as a cheap way to stop it from functioning.

Well, I'll let you search the pros/cons that have been discussed at length in relation to an egr delete...
EGR= exhaust gas recirculation (right?)
But quite a few people remove all the emissions equipment from these old trucks, and they often run much better without it. Usually because it's all so old and clogged with carbon, or just not functioning for one reason or another, that it's causing issues instead of helping.
If the egr is clogged with carbon and stuck in the open position, your truck will run very badly. It might not even start. If it's stuck in the closed position, it's effectively already deleted. The vacuum can pull on it all it wants, and it won't open. Same effect as plugging all the ports with screws.
The egr is not a necessary component for your truck to run. It just allows some exhaust gases coming out of the engine to be recirculated back into the intake to be re-burned, which helps with cleaner emissions and possibly with engine temperature. But vehicles ran for decades with no egr. My current truck has no egr.
So someone may have begun to cap off your system. No way to know, at this point.
When you start removing emissions stuff, the responsibility is now even more squarely on you to keep the truck in top running shape. If it's well tuned and taken care of, it run clean and you aren't polluting the environment more than necessary. But if you cap it all off and ignore things...it could be a pretty dirty-running truck.
But anyway. What some previous owner did to your truck and why they did it is really anyone's guess. There are a lot of dumbasses out there and I'll admit to being one of them at points in my life, and they do stuff that makes no sense.

I have an 81' with a moonroof. As far as how common they are, I live in Southern California and haven't seen another one yet... Like llewood said, mine is a 4wd.
I think you can do a vin number search at the dealer and find out how many were sold like it. That might give you an idea how common it is.
