1980 Toyota Transmission mounting problems

I have a 1980 toyota i traded a samurai for. The previous owner removed the 20R and original trans. It has a 22R and a different trans in place. I believe it to be a G52 or G54 transmission based on the fact that it is forward shift. The transmssion mount is the factory mount as you can see in the pictures below. They have rigged it with two pieces of steel to make it work, but it bounces like crazy and i want to correct it. I am looking to modify the existing bracket to hold the transmission but i am looking for some experieced help with the issue. I would hate to modify it to work on that trans and end up changing it again for a different one. Are the G52 and G54 the more common transmissions? Thanks for any help with this issue.

for one thing the through bolts they used on the crossmember are too small, they probably stripped the stock mounting point,
the material they used to move the TC mount are totally inadequate and the bolts are not even in all the way...that is one of the more Rigged mounts I have seen

ideally the cross member should be moved back about 5"

Yes, i am in full agreement that it should be moved back to fit the exisiting trans. I am looking to see if anyone has an idea on the relocation of the cross memeber. I have seen aftermarket ones but they appear to bolt up to the existing mount location. Surely someone has changed transmissions on this model vehicle before. The issue that is the more difficult part is the fact that the crossmember is not square. The bolts on the front are about 1 1/2"s closer to the center of the truck and the frame becomes wider making it almost impossible to cut the mounting brackets and weld them back on. Hope i didnt lose anyone there. Look at the top picture, you can kind of see the angle. thanks

search Front Range OFf Road Crossmember...

as far as how the stock crossmember mounts...am familiar with it, 79-83's all mount that way.

that long wheel base sami would have been a keeper IMO...

Checked out Front Range. They have a special on the mount and skidplate if this is what you were refering to:

The LWB is actually the vehicle i am talking about. Its a 1980 toyota with a stretched samurai body. I need to update that pic though. I like having something different! lol

I am thinking of removing it and going to a 5 spd that is the correct size like an L52. The gear ratio is the same from what i have read and it would be cheaper to buy a tranny than put in that aftermarket mount (though the mount looks cool). Does anyone know if there is an advantage to keeping a G52 or G54 over an L52? I would eventually like to have dual cases.

The G series transmissions are stronger, have a better input bearing design, I believe. Have you looked at Budbuilt? I emailed him awhile ago as I have a G52 I was considering swapping in place of my L52, and he had a couple solutions, depending on if I was going single or dual cases.

This was his reply:
Sure, the bbus works for your set up, but you use the front holes of the crossmember in the rear holes in the frame. Then one ubolt on each side or weld an angle bracket to bolt to. Or, you can use the BBUD which uses 2 ubolts each side and you can use it for both single and dual cases, no prob!
Lemme know if that makes sense, OK?
Thanks!
