1980 Best Motor Swap?
i was just curious what you guys thought i have a 1980 and am the original owner... it has the 20r in it with the 4 speed i would like a 5 speed and bigger motor preferably a v6 but im not sure what is going to give me the best results with least fabrication, though if needed not a problem. THANK YOU.

ok..well
basically i offroad the truck and i want to keep that aspect going im not saying money isnt an issue but im definetly willing to put in some money... but at the same time i dont want a full project truck, i just want something with more power and still be able to drive to work in but if i see a gnarley hill or nice rock garden i still want to be able to tear it up.

You just cant beat a 22r. Simply put. If you plan to do alot of steep hill climbing, go fuel injected. I have always preferred carbs myself. I'm not far from you im close to Auburn Alabama myself. Down here we dont have much for rocks, I think you will be able to get by with a nice weber carb.
The 20r head swap is a MYTH. Just swapping a stock 20R head for the 22R head on the 22R block (AkA Hybrid Engine) does not give you ANY HP gains at all. It does however, have larger ports and allows you to reach torque curves sooner than the 22R head. In other words you do not have to rev the engine as hard to reach your peak HP with a 20R head, which is why alot of people say it has more HP, it does not. Just kicks in a little sooner =)
Another myth is about the Double and Single roller chains. They have the same tensile stregth. One is not stronger than the other, however it does require 4 HP more to turn the double chain then the single row chain.
Anyone who does not believe me or wants further information talk to:
