Tach/timing light
So I'm getting ready to replace the timing chain on my 85 4runner. The truck is recently purchased, I don't feel the idle is right and its an automatic with no tachometer. I do have an old timing light that works, kinda. It will get me by setting the timing but I want to check idle speed as well.
I was thinking of buying a fancy timing light that shows rpm but they're pricey and I'm on a budget. So if my trusty old light will get me by I was just thinking of buying one of those no contact tachometers on eBay, anyone used them? Or should I just install an aftermarket tachometer? Anyone install an aftermarket tachometer, how easy is install, are you happy with it? Or...gauge cluster swap? Lol

I have a small aftermarket tach I screwed to the side of the gauge cluster. It looks ok, worked great for 2 years so far, was inexpensive, and was very easy to hook up. I was new to working on vehicles at the time but if I remember it right, it's just 3 wires: the positive post on the ignition coil, spliced to a hot wire and a body ground.
